The first use of clay
At the west Texas rock shelters clay was all
but unknown. A few small items of pure clay were recovered. These
seem at best to have been toys, for child or adult is questionable.
The samples displayed here are obviously random doodles in
clay. The suggestion of pottery or clay ball cooking were .totally
absent.
That clay and early steps in pottery making were
lacking at the canyon sites is not to be mistaken for dating clay
use after man left the shelters.
Clay use, from the start,
was one of need. It served as the caveman rocks for Florida beach
dwellers. It would be more than a thousand years before we find
pottery and it's art reaching the plateaus of the west.
