BRAIDS
It has been a frequent question to this author, "how do you keep from being bored?", this in reference to the many hours spent in the pits. I would reply, it was the "unexpected". If I need to offer a sample of the unexpected, the samples of braiding would be my first offering. A major class of artifact recovered at the Zueberbueler shelter, the braid was every where, seemed to be part of everything and did little. Yes it was not the basis of any of the crafts in use, but it still had a place in the introduction of many. It just seemed to be there, yes over and over the braid in numerous forms, seemed to be involved. How do we explain this paradox? Have you ever doodled? Been one of those kids in the park that made a necklace of dandelions? Made sand castles at the beach? If you have, you were a braid maker. A waste of time? Your dad may have thought so, you may not have discovered improvements on Einstein's theories, you may have just exercised your ability to think. You as man demonstrated the link that made man "human". Here we are going to display the many forms braiding would have at the shelter, a few uses it was put to, and offer a skill you may have considered yours, and far from the abilities of a cave man.
