Why so many?

This question comes up when first time visitors come to my home, and note the sea of artifacts. Not a few dozen, nor even a few hundred, but tens of thousands of items, all from the main site, the Zueberbueler shelter.

Had I not sufficient with one, or at most two of an item? Was there a need to recover so many, as with the cords, and the two thousand samples? Or the sandals, the stone tools, the mobiles?

The answer as to the displays, is "yes", no need for scores of the same, when you need only display one or two. But keep in mind the intent of the Pecos museum is research. One tells us they had a Langtry point. Two says "maybe they made this type here". Forty says "this was a common point in it's day, here at the shelter.

The value of many is best seen in the cords recovered. A Texas University study showed a total recovery of approximately 170 cords. If 90% of these were the remains of discarded, nondescript cords, we would be limited to the story to be told by the 10%, or 17.

When you look at the many uses that cords were put to, our scope of man's use of the cords, would be limited to theory. But if the totals were 2,000 and 10% in use, we have some 200 items to talk to us.

With these numbers, the chance is good we will see repeats of cords in use, no longer the need to theorize.

This was the true value of the West Texas shelter, the volume.
